Barnes played professional football in the NFL in the early 1960s before beginning a celebrated career as a figurative painter and graphic artist. With a BA in studio art, Barnes began regularly showing his paintings in the late 1960s and early 70s in Los Angeles and New York galleries, including Grand Central Art Galleries. He is best known for his mannerist, popular paintings of everyday life and sports. With such paintings as Sugar Shack appearing on the television series Good Times and the cover of Marvin Gaye's album, I Want You , his work is embedded in American popular culture. In 1984, he was chosen as an official artist of the Los Angeles Olympic Games. His paintings have been commissioned by the National Basketball Association, Seton Hall University, Will Smith and Kanye West.
